Peter Hollens is a 33-year-old (born 4 March 1982) American singer/songwriter, producer, and entrepreneur who is originally from Ashland, Oregon. He is perhaps best known for his work on YouTube as an a cappella artist. He releases new music videos to his YouYube channel on a regular basis. Many of the videos that he releases are based on the requests he receives from his subscribers.
He first became involved in a cappella music in 1999 when he and Leo da Silva founded the University of Oregon’s male a cappella group “On The Rocks” which is known as the first official collegiate a cappella group in Oregon. According to his official website:
Hollens is a one man a cappella group – he sings ALL parts of every song and then layers and blends them together. With over 850,000 subscribers his videos have reached over 100 million views. Hollens has collaborated with some of YouTube’s biggest artists, including Lindsey Stirling, George Watsky and Tyler Ward as well as Jason Mraz and Hunter Hayes.
Peter graduated from the University of Oregon with a Bachelor of Music in vocal performance. Since graduating, he has been involved with collegiate a cappella to include recording, producing, and judging a cappella competitions throughout the United States.
In 2010, he participated in NBC’s The Sing-Off Season 2 and was commended by judges Shawn Stockman, Nicole Scherzinger, and Ben Fields for his solo performances with his group “On The Rocks.” They were eliminated 6th out of the 10 groups performing.
Peter has released over 80 digital singles. He records and produces from his home in Eugene, Oregon, and he has also recorded for Sony and Epic Records. His recordings include tracks for “The Sing-Off Season 2 – Greatest Hits,” as well as, several a cappella albums for such groups as On The Rocks, Divisi, Cornell’s Chordials, the Duke’s Men of Yale and the Whiffenpoofs. He has also recorded several Sing-Off Season 2 winners to include Committed, the Backbeats, and the Grammy award-winning group The Swingle Singers.
In 2011, Peter started his own YouTube channel posting mostly music videos with multi-tracked a cappella covers. He frequently collaborates with other artists such as Lindsey Stirling and Taylor Davis to create his astounding videos. As of 14 October 2015, his channel has 1,120,453 subscribers.
In 2012, he released his first album. In 2013, he collaborated with Eric Whitacare to record the learning tracks to “Fly to Paradise” for Eric’s Virtual Choir 4. Also in 2013, he joined the newly founded crowdfunding platform Patreon in order to support his musical endeavors. In 2014, he signed a deal with Sony Masterworks, and on 27 October of that same year, his self-titled major label debut was released on Portrait Records/Sony Music Masterworks.
Peter is married to Evynne Hollens, founder of the a cappella group Divisi. Evynne has her own YouTube channel, posting music videos and occasionally collaborating with her husband. On 28 November 2013, she posted a video on her channel which revealed that she was expecting a baby. On 31 March 2014, the couple welcomed a new baby boy, Ashland James Hollens, to their family.
According to his official website, “He also advises many companies including Patreon, Loudr, Tubular and is on the YouTube creator advisory board. He believes in helping and educating his peers and often consults and advises many artists.”
