Children Are An Heritage

Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward. As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth. Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate. ~ Psalm 127:3-5

“It is our responsibility to create a Christlike ‘world’ in our homes, a safe place where children behave well because they enjoy the pleasant consequences of doing so, rather than to avoid the unpleasant consequences of behaving badly.  It is a world in which the child thinks, ‘I know my parents will acknowledge and appreciate me’ rather than thinking “I am only doing this because I don’t want to be beat on’ (verbally or physically).”  (Glenn I. Latham, “Christlike Parenting”)

“Children need directing and teaching what is right in a kind, affectionate manner… How often we see parents demand obedience, good behavior, kind words, pleasant looks, a sweet voice and a bright eye from a child or children when they themselves are full of bitterness and scolding!  How inconsistent and unreasonable this is!” (Brigham Young)

“Children need sunlight. They need happiness. They need love and nurture. They need kindness and refreshment and affection. Every home, regardless of the cost of the house, can provide an environment of love which will be an environment of salvation.”  (Gordon B. Hinckley, Fall General Conference, 1994)
